MADE IN PRISON

Stripes Clothing puts you on the brick wall between imprisonment and freedom. We create the opportunity to look across the other side. Whilst working on our products, inmates work on their life after prison and pass on their thoughts and stories to you.

INSPIRED BY FREEDOM

What started out as a dream, became reality after a tour in prison. After spending one day behind high fences we already experienced freedom in a different way. You come to realize how important something is once its gone. By telling you the stories weve heard from the inside we hope it does the same for you.

THE JOB

Work enables inmates to experience freedom from prison life. They keep connected to the world outside the walls while learning skills and maintaining work rhythm. When it comes to clothing inmates with a steady hand and solid motivation are selected. While creating your garments one is busy with cutting fabric. Others are responsible for sewing straight lines while the best are sewing the nitty gritty parts of a garment.

THE WORKSHOP

Inmates are taught different tasks depending on the workshops' craft. The head of the workshop, a master in its craft, motivates them to increase skill. Besides clothing, prison workshops offer a variety of crafts such as woodworking, welding, agriculture and bookbinding giving inmates the chance to develop in different ways. Special programs are offered to earn certificates or degrees in crafts. This prepares inmates for the next step: life after prison.

THE REWARD

Prisoners of course get paid too. Inmates either get paid per piece or by the hour. In some prisons, they donate a part of their salary to victims while others allow prisoners to support their families outside. Prisoners can use a part of their salary to buy privileges such as coffee or telephone cards. In most cases, this is their only source of income because it is not allowed to receive any money from outside prison.
